When Quiet is a Blade

Sometimes
when you choose
your silence
it is more painful
than the words you
would choose
to say

And at times
when you hold
your tongue
it is not your tongue
you choose
to take
away

Sometimes
Silence stretches pain
and there are times
when quiet is a blade
you’ve drawn across
my naked throat
and instead of words
on which to choke
my blood is spilt
in silent strokes
